SALT LAKE CITY — President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took to social media Sunday with a message about the opportunities COVID-19 has brought for service and humanitarian work.

“COVID-19 has brought about the largest humanitarian project of the Church to date,” Nelson said. ” We have participated in 757 projects in 137 countries, spending many millions of dollars.”

In the near future, much more time and effort will be required and that the Church is eager to continue to help, Nelson said in his Facebook post.

Nelson also said this relief comes from members of the church through both offerings and service.

“Voluntary fast offerings from our members have actually increased, as well as voluntary contributions to our humanitarian funds,” he said.

“Many members of the Church have labored to render assistance to COVID-19 victims,” Nelson said. “They have prepared and provided personal protective gear for caregivers. Thousands of Relief Society sisters in many countries have made millions of masks.”

According to President Nelson, these efforts are on top of other continuous humanitarian services that church members give.

“And this while our members continue to feed the hungry, assist refugees, and labor to relieve damage caused by natural disasters, wherever they occur throughout the world,” he said.
