SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah — Riverton High School is in the middle of its homecoming week. But at the same time, the school has reported 17 positive cases of COVID-19. One of those cases is a faculty member and 16 are students. To mitigate the futher spread of COVID-19, Riverton High School will be closed Thursday and Friday for deep cleaning.

The Jordan school board held an emergency meeting on Wednesday night to discuss the possible closure of Riverton High School

Board members considered whether to quarantine the school for two weeks as was stipulated in the plan prepared by the Jordan District and approved by the Utah State Board of Education before the school year began.

Instead, in a 6-1 vote, the board approved Thursday, September 17, as a compensation day with no instruction, and Friday, September 18, an online instruction day.

The board will further evaluate the situation at Riverton in a previously scheduled board meeting on Tuesday.

Students will resume a normal schedule on Monday, September 21.

Extracurricular activities were excluded from this vote, so Friday’s home football game against Jordan will continue as scheduled
