MILLCREEK, Utah — Firefighters are still asking people to stay away from a small fire that’s burning above Millcreek.

Still burning a week later

Around 200 firefighters in Salt Lake County are battling the Neffs Fire. Officials say the wildfire was ignited last week due to lightning. It’s burning about a mile up Neff’s Canyon near Olympus Cove. The fire is estimated at around 60 acres, although it’s still only 20% contained at this time.

Crews say cooler temps should help their efforts this week, although a number of trails in the area are still being closed off to the public. Crews are asking everyone to stay clear of the fire so they have ample space to set up operations. They’re also asking residents to keep the surrounding streets as clear as possible so their vehicles can get in and out without any issues.

Residents are being prepared for a possible future evacuation, although nothing has been announced at this time.

Wildfire roundup

Elsewhere, a new fire is being reported in Washington County south of Veyo. According to fire officials, the fire was first reported at 20 acres and is now estimated to be about 75 to 100 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Other current wildfires include the East Fork Fire, 13 miles north of Hanna, Utah, which is 68,342 acres and 68% contained. Also, the Center Creek Trail Fire, 5 miles northeast of Moon Lake in the High Uintas Wilderness, is 1,225 acres and 0% contained.

the Joint Information Center (JIC) is open to take questions regarding the Neff’s Canyon Fire from Monday, Sep. 28 to Wednesday, Sep. 30. They will answer questions regarding the current fire strategy of the Forest Service as well as potential evacuation plans should an evacuation become necessary.

JIC will be located at the Salt Lake County Emergency Coordination Center at 3380 South 900 West, Salt Lake City. Residents may call the JIC hotline with their questions at 801-743-7180.
