Brighton and Alta high schools move to temporary “split schedules”

SALT LAKE CITY — Letters sent to parents of students attending Brighton and Alta high schools, in the Canyons School District, alerted parents that both schools will move to a “temporary split schedule” effective Wednesday, Oct. 7.

The letters state that the new schedule replaces the “online-only learning model” enacted by Canyons School District (the District) on Wednesday, September 23. At that time, the District was responding to two things: an increase in positive cases of COVID-19 and the number of students at both schools placed in quarantine due to possible exposure to COVID-19.

“The split-schedule opens the door for students to return to campus for classes,” the letter from the District reads, “while also decreasing the number of students on campus at any one time.”

Between Sep. 21 and Oct. 5, according to the Canyons School District COVID-19 webpage, 13 students at Brighton High  (or 0.6% of the student population) reported active cases of COVID-19. During that same time, 115 students and staff were in quarantine.

Between Sep. 21 and October 5, the Canyons School District’s COVID-19 webpage indicated that 22 students at Alta High (or 0.95% of the student population) reported active cases of COVID-19. During that time, 47 students and staff were in quarantine.

The District says they hope to have students back to on-campus learning on a regular schedule when the new quarter begins on Monday, Oct. 26. Parents will receive updates.
