WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — West Valley Police say a pregnant woman died in a car crash Thursday night, and her baby is in critical condition still alive. The crash happened around 7 P.M. on Bangerter Highway at the intersection of 3500 South.
Fatal car crash, with miraculous delivery
Police say a 29-year-old woman, who was eight months pregnant, was riding in a Mitsubishi Lancer, along with a 28-year-old driver.
They were struck by a Subaru Forester, driven by an 18-year-old, heading south on Bangerter Highway. The driver of the Subaru is suspected of running a red light and entering the intersection at 3500 South.
Lieutenant Amy Mauer with West Valley Police says upon arrival, it was obvious the pregnant woman was injured the most severely of everyone involved.
“She was transported in critical [condition] and while out on scene, detectives were informed that she had died from injuries she sustained in the crash,” she explains.
Newborn in critical condition
Although the mother died of her injuries, emergency responders were able to save her baby.
“The baby was delivered and was in critical condition and I believe, was being flown to Primary Children’s Hospital,” says Lieutenant Mauer.
Meanwhile, both the driver of the Subaru and the driver of the Mitsubishi Lancer were listed in stable condition.
Police say they are still investigating what caused the crash and have not ruled out alcohol, drugs or distracted driving.
“We’re still looking into all of that,” she explains. “We haven’t ruled out anything yet.”
