OGDEN, Utah — An officer shooting in Ogden is currently under investigation. It comes after an Ogden police officer shot and injured a man Tuesday night who was reportedly threatening officers with a shotgun and knife.

Police sent to home following dispatch call

Ogden Police say around 7 pm dispatchers received a call from a caseworker claiming an 18-year-old man was armed with a shotgun and threatening to kill himself. According to dispatch, the man was inside a home near the 800 block of 5th Street in Ogden.

Later, dispatch received another call saying two people were fighting with the man and that he still had possession of the handgun.

When police arrived at the scene, they established a perimeter around the house. At that time, two people exited the building.

“They were relaying information when the suspect came out of a backdoor of the house with a handgun in one hand and a butcher knife in the other [hand],” explains Ogden Police Chief Randy Watt.

“The suspect advanced rapidly on an officer at the rear of the house. The officer retreated while yelling to stop the suspect’s advance, but was unsuccessful in doing so. The officer fired several rounds from a department-issued pistol, striking the suspect once in the abdomen.”

Suspect in “good condition,” shooting under investigation

Chief Watt says officers rendered first aid to the man, who was transported to a local hospital in “good condition.”

The officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave, which Chief Watt says is standard department policy. According to police, the officer was not hurt during the incident.

The investigation is now being handled by the Weber County Attorney’s Office critical incident response team. According to Chief Watt, the officer’s body camera was turned on during the time of the shooting.
