SALT LAKE CITY — Family members of Harold Robinson say that Christmas decorations they’d placed at a mural of Robinson were stolen overnight.
Sister-in-law Misty Robinson told KSL that Robinson’s family decided to decorate his mural with a Christmas theme. On Wednesday they set up a tree with lights and ornaments.
She said they intended to have Thanksgiving dinner at the mural site, “since we can’t have him in person.”
But on Thursday morning when Robinson went to check on the tree, it was gone along with the ornaments and lights.
“It’s a shame that somebody would come and do that to a place where the families come to feel a sense of … joy. It’s heartbreaking,” Robinson said.
The family has filed a police report.
Robinson was shot and killed in April, 2019, by Unified Police and Utah Highway Patrol troopers after he led officers on a high-speed chase through downtown Salt Lake City.
After he crashed into the storefront of Princess Alterations and Leatherwork at 3339 S. State Street, he ran from the truck and was shot dozens of times. He died on the scene.
At the time of his shooting, Robinson’s family apologized to the community and said he was suffering from a delusional psychosis, which he’d also experienced the year prior.
They said that because of Robinson’s reported mental illness, they believed police should have used de-escalation techniques instead of gunfire.
In February 2020, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill found that the officers had not violated county or state protocols while firing upon Robinson.
