SALT LAKE CITY — Snow days are going to be a thing of the past in the Canyons School District. From now on, snow days will become remote learning days.

“If there is a day that we can’t travel safely, students and teachers will simply go to their laptops and get to work,” said Jeff Haney, Canyons School District spokesman.

The district issued devices for learning during the pandemic, which district leaders realized would nicely facilitate working from home in inclement weather.

Haney points out there have been only two snow days in the 12-year history of the Canyons School District. But under state law, those days of disrupted learning still need to be made up by either extending the school year or removing scheduled off days.

“When we had to make up those days in the spring, the attendance was really sporadic. This is a way we won’t have to make up those days, when families may be gone on vacation for example,” said Haney.

One of those two snow days came earlier this year due to a huge snowstorm on Feb. 3. The schools made it up later.

The Canyons Board of Education voted to update its policy in their new emergency closure guidelines.
