SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown says that an officer whose patrol car was hit in an intersection early Saturday morning was recovering from minor injuries Saturday evening.

Brown also thanked two motel employees that helped get the officer out of his damaged car.

“I’m so grateful for the help of 2 brave citizens,” Brown said in a tweet.

The accident happened just before 4 a.m. at 600 S. and 200 W. according to Salt Lake City Police Lt. Bill Manzanares.

He said that a large private commercial-sized vehicle hit the officer’s car in the intersection. The officer was reportedly knocked unconscious and the car was set on fire.

Manzanares said a Motel 6 employee that heard the crash ran to the accident scene and pulled the officer from the car.

The officer received minor injuries and was hospitalized. The driver of the vehicle that struck the police cruiser was reportedly cooperative. Police said there was no sign that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
