USPS: Downtown SLC post office to close early Saturday due to possible protests

SALT LAKE CITY — The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will close the downtown Salt Lake City post office early on Saturday, Jan. 15, as a security precaution.
In a statement, the USPS said the downtown Salt Lake City Post Office at 230 W. 200 S. Libby will close at noon on Saturday “for the safety of customers and employees in the event of civil unrest.”
The FBI told KSL Newsradio that the bureau is helping to secure the Utah Capitol in the event that potential protests turn violent.
“We’ve got a heightened posture here at the FBI carrying through the weekend and inauguration on [Jan. 20],” said Assistant Special Agent in Charge Dave Fitzgibbons on Thursday.

Along with closing the downtown post office early, the USPS said on Friday that it will temporarily remove several blue collection boxes, again, to protect postal property, employees and the public.
Those boxes to be temporarily removed are located at:
- 8 West 100 South
- 50 West 200 South
- 4 South Main Street
- 4 South Main Street
