SALT LAKE CITY — Fire officials say that a smoke alarm inside a home that was on fire woke the family in time to safely evacuate on Sunday morning.

A call for help came into the Salt Lake City Fire Department around 6:30 a.m.  Chief Dan Walker said the residents were able to self-evacuate from the home at 1376 West 500 South.

While the residents were able to make it out safely, Walker said that a dog and cat did not, and they did not survive the fire.

One of the residents was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation according to officials.

Walker said the home was “severely engulfed in flames” when his crew arrived, and though the flames were put out quickly, the residents are almost certainly displaced.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, and this story will be updated as more information becomes available.
