SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police confirm that a human body was found by kayakers on the east bank of the Jordan River on Sunday.

Lt. Steve Wooldridge with the Salt Lake City Police Department said the adult male was found just west of the International Peace Gardens.

Lt. Wooldridge told KSL that the Salt Lake City Fire Department responded with a water rescue team who determined conclusively that the male was deceased. Wooldridge says that a documentation process is continuing.

Access to the Jordan River Trail by pedestrians and bikers is limited in the area where the body was found.

Police say it is too early to tell how the adult male died, and that they will know more after an examination by the medical examiner. But Wooldridge did say that death by drowning is considered rare in a high desert wildland interface setting.

An investigation continues by the Salt Lake City Police Department, Salt Lake City Fire, and the state Office of the Medical Examiner.
