SALT LAKE CITY — Dozens of cars of a Union Pacific train hauling flammable liquid, as well as commodities like wheat and flour, derailed near State Route 257 in Millard County on Saturday afternoon.
Lt. Robert Clark with the Millard County Sheriff’s office told KSL the train derailed near mile marker 25 on SR 257. The cause for the derailment is still unknown.
Lt. Clark said that some of the cars contained flammable liquid.
“These liquids are contained at this time,” said Clark, “they are contained to the railroad right of way.”
The Millard County Sheriff’s Department, the Delta and Hinckley Fire Departments, as well as Union Pacific responded after the accdient. Clark said there were no water sources nearby, and that nobody was injured by the derailment.
In a statement issued Sunday, Union Pacific said that 28 cars derailed in the accident. On Sunday afternoon, the company was working to remove debris and repair the area of the derailment.
