SALT LAKE CITY — The calendar may say March 3, but the mercury in your thermometer indicates weird weather in northern Utah, with temperatures more like April or May on the Wasatch Front.

“Near 60 degrees, very very warm,” commented KSL meteorologist Grant Weyman on Utah’s Morning News Wednesday, adding he expected warm weather to last through the weekend

Weather for March in Utah can range from snowy and cold to mild and sunny, but the average high temperature of the month in Salt Lake City is still just 55 degrees. Typically, the area can expect seven days of rain in the month of March, and average low temperatures around 38 degrees.

Multiple days in a row of highs over 60 lines up better with April averages for the region, Weyman said.

“[It’s] feeling like some spring, and not just for a day or two, but temperatures well above the average for the next several days,” he added.

He expected another storm to arrive by early-to-mid next week to bring temperatures back to more normal for March.

However, over the last several years, northern Utah has recorded unseasonably warm weather in March. For example, March 6, 2020 was the warmest March 6 on record for Salt Lake City, with a high of 70 degrees. And multiple March days set records in March 2017 with highs over 70.
