SALT LAKE CITY. – Salt Lake City is getting $87 million in stimulus money, but Mayor Erin Mendenhall said she doesn’t know yet where all of the money will go. Cities are waiting on guidance from the US Treasury on details for how the funds can be allocated.

Mendenhall did say she is planning on distributing the money with these 3 principles in mind:

  • Equitable economic recovery
  • Resident stability and opportunity
  • City services for our employees and residents

Mendenhall said some of what the money could be spent on is, expanding the youth city after-school program, and small business loans. “Salt Lake City’s youth city programming, which has been a tremendous subsidized after-school program in different parts of the city before the pandemic was dramatically expanded with our “Cares Act” investments and we want to be able to expand that.”

“We want to support your access to a good job. We want to support your business. We want to support your availability to launch new businesses, and we want to support your children and their ability to have mentorship.” “I see it as a slingshot that’s going to be able to thrust us into the future we’ve been talking about, the future of an equitable change.”

About half of the $87 million stimulus money will come now, the rest will be coming in a year. The city is looking for input from residents on how the funds will be used.

We want to hear from you.
