SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Spencer Cox issued a proclamation to authorize the lowering of both the national and state flags in response to the attack at the U.S. Capitol Friday that left the suspect, as well as one of the officers, dead. The directive applies to all state facilities in Utah, with the governor encouraging private businesses and citizens to follow suit.

The directive will go into effect at sunset on Friday and last until sunset on Tuesday.

The lowering of flags is in line with action from President Joe Biden, who issued an order applying to “the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions,” according to a statement from the White House.
