SALT LAKE CITY — “Music for a Summer Evening,” a concert series featuring The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, will be cancelled this year. Officials for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint announced the decision Friday.
The annual performances, usually held during the week of Pioneer Day in July, won’t occur because of large gathering concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic, the church said in a statement.
Despite the cancellation, the Tabernacle Choir will continue to hold auditions for new choir members. Those interested can submit their applications online beginning Tuesday, June 1 at TabChoir.org/auditions. The application closes Sunday, August 15.
Tabernacle Choir President Ron Jarrett says holding auditions is a move in the right direction.
“While we are all disappointed not to be singing for the Pioneer Day concert, I am happy to announce that we will begin the 2021 audition process for new Choir members,” Jarrett said. “This means we are looking forward to not only singing together in the future, but welcoming new members into our ranks.”
In order to be considered for the choir, applicants must be members and in good standing with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, be between 25 and 55 years of age on April 30, 2022, and live within 100 miles of Salt Lake City.
