Salt Lake City is set to host back-to-back IFSC climbing World Cups which gives locals an opportunity to preview the new Olympic sport before it debuts in Tokyo.
The tournaments are Friday, Saturday, and May 28-30th. USA Climbing Teams Manager Meg Coyne says the city is about to become center stage for Sport Climbing.
“We are having not one, not two, but three World Cups in two weekends right here in Salt Lake,” Coyne said. “It is absolutely a first for the U.S. and something that’s incredibly unusual internationally as well.”
It is a sport that requires strength and elite athleticism and it is fast growing.
“So many gyms have been popping up all over the country,” said USA speed climber John Brosler.
Salt Lake City is also home to USA Climbing which is located at Industry SLC at 600 West.
“That’s a little hole in the wall and you can’t see it from the street but it’s ours and we love it and we know that it is an unusual privilege,” Coyne said.
