BRIGHTON, Utah — Just in time for the Memorial Day weekend holiday, Utah officials opened up the gates on a number of seasonal highways.

Crews from the Utah Department of Transportation opened the gates at Guardsman Pass on Wednesday, allowing traffic to flow between Big Cottonwood Canyon and Park City. Other seasonal highways now open to traffic in Utah include S.R. 39 east of Ogden, through the Monte Cristo mountain range, and S.R. 65, northeast of Salt Lake City to East Canyon.

Some popular seasonal highways in Utah won’t be quite ready for the unofficial start of summer. John Gleason with UDOT says the Mirror Lake Highway will be open to about Trial Lake.

“There’s a portion of that that’s going to be closed through Memorial Day weekend, but we should be able to clear the remainder the following week,” Gleason told KSL NewsRadio.

The Alpine Loop road won’t be completely open due to a repaving project.

“There’s a portion of it that will be closed for road construction, but other than that, you’ll be able to access the Alpine Loop,” Gleason said.

The US Forest Service says crews continue to remove debris left behind by snowmelt on the Nebo Loop road. They expect to complete that work in time to open the road Friday.
