SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — As Utahns look to hit the road for the holiday weekend, most drivers can expect to pay a premium at the pump.

Paying big bucks at the pump this holiday weekend

This time last year, the national average was about a buck cheaper per gallon. For many families, that can be the difference between going on a road trip or staying home.

A year ago, the entire state of Utah was only averaging around $2.21 a gallon, while the national average was closer to $1.97.

Comparing Utah’s gas prices to the national average today, the Beehive State is well above normal.

According to AAA, the average price at the pump in the U.S. sits at $3.04. Meanwhile, Utah drivers are shelling out an average of $3.35 per gallon.

Drivers in southern Utah will be paying the most for gas

The situation gets even worse for those planning a weekend getaway to southern Utah.

Right now, the highest prices in the state are found in Piute, Wayne and Garfield counties.

Piute County is averaging $3.59 a gallon, while Wayne County is at $3.54 and Garfield County sits at $3.52.

For Utahns looking to save a few bucks, it may be best to head east this weekend. That’s because the lowest average gas prices in the state are in Duchesne, Uintah and Carbon counties.

Duchesne is averaging $3.19 a gallon, while Uintah County is at $3.22 and Carbon County sits at $3.26.

For those travelling out of state, the average price of gas in Wyoming is only $3.05. Meanwhile, Nevada is even more expensive. On average, their drivers are paying $3.62 at the pump.
