World Famous Yum Yum Food Truck vandalized with Anti-Asian graffiti

LAYTON, Utah  —  A well-known food truck was vandalized over the weekend.  A social media post shows The World Famous Yum Yum Food Truck spray-painted with anti-Asian racial slurs.

“The words were definitely slur words and really insulting words,” said Erin Cotter, who does marketing for the family-owned Filipino food truck.

She says it was parked at 1860 North 285 West in Layton Saturday night and when she woke up Sunday, white spray paint graffiti nearly covered it.

“I just felt really hurt.” Cotter said.

Benjamin Pierce is a chef and part owner. He says they don’t know who may have done this, especially because they always trying to help customers.

“We just don’t understand why somebody would do something like that especially when in our community they see us and we’re just like everybody else, you know, and we’re always giving to people regardless of money or no money. If you’re hungry we’ll feed you,” he said.

Pierce and Cotter said the Mayor of Layton City, Joy Petro came out to see the owners of The World Famous Yum Yum Food Truck on Sunday. Petro tells KSL Newsradio she happened to know one of the family’s neighbors who told her about the incident.

“I wanted to just go let them know that I’m sorry it happened to them,” Petro said.

“And certainly this is not how I see nor portray our city,” she said.

Cotter says the community has also shown the family lots of support. She says people have offered to repaint and re-wrap the truck. The family says they have painted over the truck and hope to be back in business Tuesday.

Cotter and Pierce want people to support them by coming to a Philippine Independence Day celebration on Saturday, June 12.

Layton Police have not responded to our calls about whether they have any leads or suspects.
