UPDATE: After a number of hours where businesses were evacuated and the roadway was closed. State Street reopened just before 9 a.m.

SALT LALKE CITY — A portion of State Street is closed Friday morning after a car hit a building at 1150 South around 1 a.m. Salt Lake fire officials say a driver lost control and crashed into the Glens Lock store causing a gas leak.

Area businesses were evacuated, those evacuations were lifted shortly before 8 a.m., but the stretch of roadway remains closed between 900 South & 1300 South until they fix a gas leak.

Salt Lake Fire spokesman Captain Anthony Burton says it’s a complicated process.

“To shut this gas off, they are going to have to deal with this remotely so that’s digging up the street and accessing two to three points at this time,” said Burton.

The driver of the car sustained some minor injuries and passed a DUI test.  Fire officials say it sounds like a tire popped causing the driver to lose control.
