NCAA officials planned to meet this week after the Supreme Court ruled on student-athlete compensation.
The Division I Council is expected to discuss the topic of making money from an athlete’s name, image and likeness. It’s a separate but related matter from Monday’s Supreme Court ruling. That ruling ends the NCAA’s limits on education-related benefits for college athletes.
The NCAA’s president said he supports rule changes for name, image and likeness. But he says the council has to decide whether to make permanent changes right now, or temporarily change the rules while working with Congress on a single national standard.
Different states have started to pass their own laws about it.
Meanwhile, BYU’s athletic director says the new supreme court ruling on athlete compensation brings new opportunities.
Tom Holmoe says the new Built4Life program will provide opportunities for name, image and likeness when legislation passes.
It also includes help moving beyond their time at college.
“(Monday’s) Supreme Court ruling is another element to help us adjust to the necessities of student-athlete compensation. BYU Athletics remains supportive of our student-athletes making as much money as they can in this new landscape,” Holmoe said in a statement upon request from KSL Sports. “No matter what the details of student-athlete compensation or NIL legislation will look like, we’re ready to fold it into our Built4Life program.”
