ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Dixie State Board of Trustees approved recommending the name Utah Tech University as the new name for the school.

That move does not officially change the school’s name. Instead, it goes now to the legislature and the Utah State Board of Higher Education for final approval.

The trustees met for around 90 minutes, hearing passionate speeches both for and against their former name recommendation, Utah Polytechnic State University.

“It’s clear that Utah Polytechnic State University was an epic failure,” remarked the Vice-Chair of the Board Tiffany Wilson. “We’re willing to admit that.” The concession was followed by many people cheering and clapping in agreement.

The reason Utah Polytechnic State University was considered to begin with, according to Wilison, was due to the name meeting state requirements for the name change.

Despite the board approving Utah Tech University, a motion was made by member Jon Pike to call the St. George campus the “Dixie Campus of Utah Tech University.” The motion passed and will move onto the Legacy Committee.
