This July 4th weekend could be one of the busiest Independence Day travel periods ever on the roads, as pent up demand and a long holiday weekend combine.
It means I-15 could fill up congestion and even stop and go traffic.
The Utah Department of Transportation expects delays Friday of up to 30 minutes on northbound I-15 through Davis County from 3 – 7 p.m., and up to 20 minutes on southbound I-15 through Salt Lake County from 3:30 – 7 p.m.
On Monday, delays for return trips could reach 10 minutes on southbound I-15 in Davis County from 12 – 4 p.m.
The National and State Parks in Utah could be really busy this weekend as well. People could see delays and heavy traffic on the highways and roads near those destinations as they travel for July 4th.
UDOT’s construction projects will suspend but some restrictions will remain in some work zones.
AAA Utah told KSL NewsRadio last week that they expect this weekend to be the second-highest Independence Day travel volume on record, trailing only 2019.
Nationally, they say road trips will continue to dominate this summer, with an expected 43.6 million travelers driving to their destination.
