SALT LAKE CITY — For the first time since early March, a dozen counties in Utah are back in the Covid-19 high transmission category

Case counts were at their highest in four months Thursday with a count of 668. There are 230 people now hospitalized with the virus; two more Utahns have died.

The health department dashboard shows Box Elder, Carbon, Duschesne, Iron, Juab, Millard, San Juan, Sanpete, Sevier, Tooele, Uintah, and Washington counties are now in the high category. The health department’s transmission categories are based on seven-day case counts, 14-day positivity rates and ICU capacity.

All but one of the dozen counties have lower vaccination rates

Despite the announcement from Gov. Spencer Cox that Utah hit its 70% vaccination goal this week, 11 of these 12 counties have given at least one dose of the shot to fewer than 60% of adults older than 18.

To date, nearly 2.9 million vaccine doses have been administered across Utah.
