SALT LAKE CITY — An injured Montana firefighter is receiving treatment at the University of Utah Burn Center.

On Saturday, Dan Steffensen, of the Red Lodge Fire Rescue, was fighting the Harris Fire near Joliet, Mont., when he was overcome by a fast-moving blaze brought on by strong winds.

He is listed in serious condition.

“We’d like to thank the wildland firefighting community for reaching out to us with offers of help and words of support,” said Red Lodge Fire Chief Tom Kuntz. “Please keep Dan and his family in your thoughts and prayers during these difficult times. This event is a reminder that firefighting is dangerous and we are truly grateful to those who answer the call to help others in time of need.”

Steffense has been a firefighter with Red Lodge Fire since 2015.  He is a nationally-qualified wildland firefighter. Steffense has fought fires in several Western states, including California and Oregon, as an engine boss and tender operator.
