Tokyo Games to debut four new sports

SALT LAKE CITY — Four sports will be making their Olympic debut at the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

In August 2016, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced baseball, softball, karate, skateboard and sports climbing would be added to the Tokyo Games.

According to the IOC, the addition of skateboarding and sports climbing is a step by the committee to attract the Games to younger people.

The IOC also considered a variety of factors, including youth appeal and gender equality when it made its decision. 

According to the IOC, the addition of the new sports will add 18 new events. It will also add 474 athletes with an even number of men and women for all sports, with the exception of baseball and softball. A softball is team has 15 athletes, while baseball has 24. 

Murray resident Nathaniel Coleman will be representing Team USA in the sports climbing event.
