SALT LAKE CITY — The Delta variant is taking a toll on the unvaccinated according to doctors. The coronavirus pandemic is far from over and doctors said it’s being fueled by those not vaccinated.

On Monday at a press briefing, the Utah Department of Health stated 98.5% of all people who died since January 16th, 2021 from COVID-19 were not vaccinated.

Dr. Taki May, from Intermountain Healthcare said, “right now we have high volumes of patients in the hospital and we’re really nervous about our COVID numbers rising because we remember what it was like when it was really bad. And I fear that we’re heading there again.”

Intermountain Healthcare reported 89.7% of Utah’s coronavirus cases in the last week had not received vaccines.  They released the numbers approaching the Pioneer Day weekend:

That’s a total of 2,269 positve COVID-19 cases in four days, with 343 patients currently hospitalized and nine more deaths.

The Health Department said the Delta variant accounts for almost all those in the hospital.  In a statement they said “we have the tool to end the disruption and inconveniences of COVID-19 on our lives and the economy – vaccination.”
