CENTERVILLE, Utah — Charges have been filed in a Centerville road rage incident. One man is in jail and the other is in the hospital. In an updated press release from Centerville Police Department the driver of a pickup truck, 44-year-old Shawn Paul Smith was arrested. The other driver remains in the hospital with serious internal bleeding and broken bones. He is expected to survive his injuries.

The Centerville road rage incident happened Monday night. Smith got into an argument with a 20-year-old man in a parking lot at Walmart. Initially, Smith told police he was followed to a Target parking lot by the 20-year-old. Smith went on to tell investigators a gun was pulled out and pointed at him and his children. He informed investigators the 20-year-old tried to get into his truck and that is why he hit the gas and ran over the 20-year-old.

After further investigation, reviewing video surveillance and interviewing witnesses, police said Smith actually followed the 20-year-old. Investigators also found out there was no weapon involved. Smith left the scene and did not contact authorities to report the incident.

Centerville police arrested Smith at his home. He was booked into the Davis County Jail. The charges are second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree failure to remain at an accident with serious injury.
