SLCPD Body-Worn Camera from July 20, 2021
SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has released body-cam footage of an Officer-Involved Critical Incident that happened on July 20, 2021.
The SLCPD responded to a home at 1660 West 800 North after receiving a 911 call from a woman who told police a man was armed with a gun and threatening suicide.
The man was later found dead in the apartment. He was identified as 42-year-old Navada Escholt.
According to a police report, officers arrived on the scene at 12:06 p.m. They attempted to contact Escholt by calling him on the phone and by knocking on his door. These attempts were unsuccessful.
“At 12:30 p.m. the door opened, and the subject exited the apartment. Almost immediately, the subject fired a round towards the officers who quickly moved to take cover,” the report stated.
Two of the officers took cover behind structures and vehicles, the third officer was forced to take cover behind a tree. The report indicates that he then fired a single shot towards Navada.
“At 12:31 p.m. a second round was fired from inside the apartment, and the officer taking cover behind the tree indicated he heard the round fly past him,” read the report.
The police officers were able to contain the area shortly after.
