SPRINGDALE, Utah — A popular Zion National Park trail remains open to the public, but in the future, you might need to plan ahead and make a reservation in order to take the hike on Angels Landing.
According to the St. George News, Springdale town officials voted Wednesday to consider a reservation and lottery system for Angels Landing hikers. However, before making any final decisions, the town will accept public comment and input for 30 days on the proposal. After that, the Springdale Town Council would need to decide whether to implement a lottery and reservation system, which would take effect next year if approved.
Chief of Resource Management Cass Bromley told the St. George News under the proposed system, hikers would make advance reservations through a lottery system, similar to the system in place at “The Wave” in Kanab, Utah. Getting a spot on the famous Kanab landmark can mean a four month wait.
Zion National Park officials said thousands of people a day visit the popular Angels Landing Trail. These numbers are typical during peak season, between May and November.
This trail is considered one of the most dangerous by park officials. Since 2000, thirteen people have fallen to their deaths while hiking the trail.
