SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah teacher who worried about a former student trapped in Afghanistan says that student and her family are now safely out of the country.

Teacher from Utah: Student no longer in Afghanistan

Utah teacher Kassy Stevens said her former student’s family went to Afghanistan to visit family before the Taliban took over. She, her mother and siblings became trapped and reached out for help, and after several days of working with members of Congress Stevens said the family is now safe in Qatar.

“That was just the best news I had heard, it was a huge weight off my shoulders,” Stevens told Jeff Caplan’s Afternoon News on KSL NewsRadio.

According to Stevens, the family’s extended family, 10 brothers and sisters were also able to get out. She is now working with Congressman Blake Moore’s office to help the extended family.

“We’ll have more paperwork and things to fill out for the refugee family now to join her when she comes home.”

Stevens says she doesn’t know the details of how they got out, but she’s just so relieved.
