REXBURG, Idaho — Lori Vallow will remain in a mental health facility for at least one more week before an Idaho judge rules on whether she should stay there for treatment.

That word came out of a hearing in her criminal case. She faces charges including murder in the deaths of her two children. Investigators found the remains of JJ Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16, on Idaho property belonging to her husband, Chad Daybell, in 2020.

Vallow has been in the mental health facility since a judge found her incompetent to stand trial earlier this year, an action that put the proceedings on hold.

In court, Judge Steven Boyce said a physician wrote him asking to extend Vallow’s stay at the facility. Boyce said the letter did not provide enough information or detail for him to make a decision. He plans to issue his ruling on Sept. 8.

Vallow did not attend the hearing Monday, which was held by video conference.

Earlier this month, Chad Daybell, who also faces charges including murder in the case, waived his right to a speedy trial to give his attorneys more time to prepare their case. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

Both Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow also face charges in connection with the deaths of their previous spouses – one in Idaho, one in Arizona.
