FARMINGTON, Utah — A flare-up of the Legacy Fire could be seen early on Wednesday morning burning about five acres west of Farmington.

The orange glow and smoke could be seen from I-15 just before 6 AM. But fire crews got it taken care of within the hour.

Fire officials say the wind kicked up a hot spot from the Legacy Fire that was started by a lightning strike two weeks ago.

“It looked impressive there for a bit, but we have resources around it and pretty well got it knocked out. They allowed it to burn to areas of the black, so it’s not going anywhere,” said Dave Vickers, the Wasatch Front area fire management officer for the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.

Vickers said the flare-up burned about five acres. But there was never a danger to any homes or other structures in west Farmington.

Vickers said they have been monitoring hot spots around the wetlands since the fire broke out. But it’s a hard area to access, because trucks often sink in the frag.

“We herd the fire to the areas we can access and go direct on it, but we don’t send people out into the frag because it’s not safe,” said Vickers.

He said the blaze out there fires put out a lot of heat, and a lot of big flames.

“The fire is not controlled, it hasn’t been, but it is 100% contained. So we will be playing with pockets of this until we get a definitive rainstorm that puts some moisture on it,” he said.
