MOAB, Utah — Grand County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue responded to their 103rd incident this year on Sunday when a 26-year-old Idaho man ended up stranded at Wingate Sandstone Wall near Big Bend on the Colorado River.
The climber tried the ascent without ropes, but became stuck at 330 feet. He called 911 from the site and rescue crews were then notified.
The Utah Rangers arrived on the scene first to find the victim injured and without water. Classic Air Medical lifted rescue crews above the cliff where one responder was let down to the victim. The second responder slid down a fixed rope to the base and was able to walk the rest of the way.
Grand County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue responded to 17 incidents in September, including, six injured hikers, five injured mountain bikers, two injured climbers, a lost hiker and a medical response at the Green River.
In light of the increased number or rescues, Grand County officials emphasize the importance of selecting a venture that fits your skill level.
“Always choose trails and routes that match your abilities. Research and knowledge of the terrain can make the difference between an enjoyable adventure and tragedy,” Grand County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue said in a social media post.
