SALT LAKE CITY — They had a big win over the weekend, and now it’s another big day for the University of Utah football team.

They are flying to Texas to say goodbye to Aaron Lowe, his funeral is Monday afternoon in Mesquite, just outside Dallas.

Lowe’s teammates, coaches, other school staff and faculty are expected to attend the funeral which will be held at the Family Cathedral of Praise.

Sunday afternoon people gathered to pay respects at Precious Memories Mortuary in Duncanville, including Lowe’s former high school teammates.

“It was hurtful walking in there,” former West Mesquite football player Kyree Miller told WFAA. “I cried a little bit.”

Miller played football with Lowe. So did Trevion McGill, who said Lowe didn’t deserve what happened.

“He never got into any problems. Always positive,”  McGill told WFAA.

Salt Lake City police say 22-year-old Buk M. Buk showed up uninvited to a house party, and got a gun from another person’s shoulder bag and shot Lowe and a 20-year-old woman. Lowe died shortly afterward and the woman was taken to the hospital.

Lowe’s brother Chris Jackson told KSL TV he is proud he had the opportunity to be his big brother.

“The ‘why,’ it doesn’t bring us any solace because we know what kind of person that my brother was. My brother’s a peacemaker. Never in his life has he participated in any type of physical altercation. That wasn’t his demeanor,” said Jackson.

He says he hopes to be an advocate for families who are dealing with a tragic loss of a loved one.

The Utes had a bye week after Lowe’s death, and came back with his mother’s blessing for their game against USC on Saturday. And they had a great game, winning in the Coliseum for the first time since 1916.
