GRAND COUNTY, Utah — Grand County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue was kept busy Thursday with a pair of incidents, happening at almost the same time.
According to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, the first call came in on an injured mountain biker. The incident occurred about 9 miles into Porcupine Rim Trail. An Ohio woman was injured while attempting an obstacle called The Driving Board.
It is an area that Search and Rescue has been called to several times in the past. Emergency personnel hiked 4 miles up a single-track to get to the victim as quickly as possible. Specially-outfitted UTVs were used in getting the victim transported out to the trailhead.
The operation took seven hours to complete.
A short time into the mountain biking incident, emergency personnel received a call of an injured hiker. The hiker had fallen nearly 30 feet near SR-128. It was roughly 26 miles up the river from U.S Highway 191. A 65-year-old man suffered serious injuries from a fall down a steep hill.
The man was treated by paramedics. He was then packaged into a litter, and with the use of a safety belay, he was lowered to the highway.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue has now responded to 116 incidents in 2021. Emergency personnel have also responded to 15 incidents in October.
