SANDY, Utah — Sandy City will inaugurate its first female mayor in January 2022. Will West Valley City also elect its first female leader?

Utahns mailed in or dropped off ballots this week ahead of Election Day on Tuesday. People also had the option of voting in person. 

There are still outstanding ballots in Salt Lake County, but one candidate appears to be the first female mayor of her city. 

Now apparent Sandy Mayor-elect Monica Zoltanski says challenger Jim Bennett called Thursday night to concede the race and congratulate her on winning a spirited election. 

The race in Sandy started with eight candidates and the ranked-choice voting system has eliminated six of them this week. Zoltanski holds about 50% of the vote currently to Bennett’s 49%.

The frontrunner in West Valley has a much wider lead. Karen Lang has a roughly 1,800 vote advantage over Steve Buhler. Lang holds a commanding 60% of the votes. A win would also give her the title of first female mayor of West Valley City. 

As of Friday morning, the Salt Lake County Clerk’s office says there are nearly 14,000 uncounted ballots.
