SALT LAKE CITY — A fire in Parleys Canyon in August burned more than 600 acres and forced many homeowners to evacuate. Now, crews from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources have begun reseeding efforts to address the damage done by the fire.
Mark Farmer, with the DWR, said that with the use of a helicopter, crews will spread a reseeding treatment over the burnt areas of the canyon. Farmer says the treatment will help settle the soil and allow it to regrow.
According to Farmer, the treatment will help reduce erosion and flooding. It will also help reduce the growth of invasive plants.
However, time is needed for everything to return to normal, said Farmer.
“It will take two to three years,” he said. “Really, to get it back close to where it was before.”
Farmer noted the importance of the canyon to both humans and wildlife.
“This is an important watershed for Salt Lake City,” he said. “And it’s an important area for wildlife habitat.”
As a result, crews are getting the project started before the winter months set in.
