SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources announced Monday the application dates for the state’s 2022 spring turkey hunt.

The DWR will start accepting applications on Dec. 1. All applications must be turned in by Dec. 27 at 11 p.m. If you are interested in participating in the limited hunt, you can apply online at the DWR website or apply over the phone by calling the closest DWR office.

The spring turkey hunt will be in April

The limited-entry turkey hunt will be held April 9-28, 2022. Utah’s five regions will have a limited number of permits available in the numbers that follow:

The drawing results will be announced no later than Jan. 6, 2022. The DWR will also send out the results via email. However, interested individuals can obtain the results online, or by calling 1-800-221-0659.

The DWR says if your name isn’t drawn for the spring limited-entry hunt, you are not out of luck. The general statewide turkey hunt will be in May, and permits for the general hunt are not limited.

Permits for the general statewide turkey hunt will go on sale on Feb. 24, 2022.

Turkey population in Utah

According to the DWR, there are between 25,000 and 35,000 wild turkeys currently in the state.

And while some of the population has been hurt by the recent drought, the DWR says there is still a strong turkey population around the state.

The DWR also says there are two subspecies of the animal in Utah: Rio Grande and Merriam’s.
