DAVIS COUNTY, Utah — A child between 1 and 14 years old has died from COVID-19 in Davis County.

“Children who get COVID-19 can get really sick, and unfortunately, as we are reporting today, can die,” said State Epidemiologist Dr. Leisha Nolen in an emailed statement.

“This is a tragic reminder that COVID-19 is still spreading in our communities and is still causing preventable deaths. Vaccines help prevent serious illness and death. Please, if you or your child haven’t been vaccinated yet, now is the time.”

The child was reportedly hospitalized at the time of his death. The Utah Department of Health confirmed that the young boy is the third person under 18 to die in the state from COVID-19.

In the latest update from the Utah Department of Health released Wednesday, the state reported 15 more deaths from the virus. The child was the youngest of the deaths by at least 30 years.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
