The water available in Utah’s snowpack this winter is above the 20-year average in most areas of the state.
Data from the Natural Resources Conservation Service shows the snow water equivalent in the current snowpack ranges from 99% of the yearly average in the Ogden-Weber drainage to 180% in southwestern Utah.
The Provo-Utah Lake drainage stands at 107% of average. The Duchesne drainage, which also provides water to the Wasatch Front, is at 137%.
Statewide, the snowpack average from winter storms and snow fall so far is 130% above the average. With ample time left in this winter, there is a possibility snowpack will continue to increase.
Utah has been gripped by drought conditions in recent years. Although the snowpack numbers are encouraging, data from the National Integrated Drought Information System shows most of Utah is still in a severe drought status.
