MOAB, Utah — A 55-year-old man from Moab has died following a wingsuit flight accident Friday, according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

According to police, the flight began on a cliff overlooking Professor Valley near Rocky Rapid in Grand County. Authorities were notified of the accident shortly after noon when his satellite messaging device noticed an impact and automatically transmitted an SOS signal.

Once on scene, search and rescue from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search for the victim. Emergency personnel used a boat and technical rescue gear in the search. An air search eventually found the victim 1,000 feet below his jump point and 700 feet above the river.

Two medics from the helicopter were lowered to the victim. Once there, they confirmed the victim was deceased.

Due to the dangerous slope on which the victim was found, a hoist helicopter from the Utah Department of Public Safety was called in to assist in removing the victim.

The victim’s identity has not been released.
