COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah — The Canyons School District announced Tuesday night that the district will switch to a day of online learning next week.
Due to the constant rise in COVID-19 cases, student absences and a shortage in the staff, the district made the decision to call for an emergency Remote Learning Day on Tuesday, Jan. 18. According to the district, students will return to in-person learning on Wednesday, Jan. 19.
The temporary switch to remote learning was approved by Canyons Board of Education in consultation with the Utah State Board of Education, state elected leaders, and the Salt Lake County Health Department.
The Remote Learning Day falls at the end of the Martin Luther King holiday weekend. With students already scheduled to be out of school on Friday, Jan. 14, this will give schools within the district five straight days to pause and reset, according to a school district press release.
Recently, the U.S Centers for Disease and Control set a new five-day isolation and incubation policy. In line with these guidelines, after the five-day period, the district’s dashboard for active COVID-19 cases will return to zero.
The Board of Education also approved two additional remote-learning Fridays. The district now has eight remote-learning Fridays for the school year.
