Utah Highway Patrol investigating wrong-way crash on I-215

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Highway Patrol is investigating a wrong-way crash on I-215 early Sunday morning that sent four people to the hospital.

According to the UHP, the accident occurred at northbound I-215 West at about 600 S, near the I-80 interchange at 2:51 a.m.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered a passenger vehicle, occupied by two individuals, had been driving southbound in the northbound lanes and had collided head on with a semi-truck.

After the collision, the semi became fully engulfed in fire, and the passenger vehicle spun off the highway to the right shoulder.

Both individuals in the semi were transported to the hospital in good condition. Neither of the occupants in the passenger vehicle were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Both individuals were transported to the hospital. The driver of the passenger vehicle was listed in fair condition, while the passenger was in critical condition.

Impairment is being investigated as potential cause of the wrong-way crash on I-215.

Northbound I-215 West was closed during the investigation of the accident. All traffic was diverted on to SR-201 and California Avenue.
