SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City’s Mayor Erin Mendenhall announced that next month is Free Fare February for Utah.
Mayor Mendenhall’s announcement came Tuesday afternoon. #FreeFare February means the public can ride all of UTA’s public transit for free.
The month-long free fare offering could be a demonstration of a public transit system under new legislation.
House Bill 164 is one that will likely be discussed in the 2022 Legislative Session. The bill is sponsored by Representative Joel K. Briscoe (D – District 25). If it passes, HB164 would make all public transit services entirely free.
With the gunk filling up in the Wasatch Front this season, a public transit system free of fares could incentivize people to ride the trains and buses, and reduce emissions.
