WEST VALLEY CITY — Police arrested two people at a gas station on California Avenue early Friday morning after an on-and-off chase that began in West Valley.

An officer became curious about a car with a temporary tag that didn’t match the vehicle and followed it from a hotel parking lot on Redwood Road.

Lieutenant Robert Brinton with West Valley police said once the suspects noticed an officer was following them, they began driving erratically. The suspects’ vehicle also started to smoke. It appeared to be having mechanical issues.

Police ended the first chase but watched the vehicle through UDOT cameras.

Eventually, officers caught up with the vehicle at a gas station near I-215 on California Avenue. There, the suspects first tried to flee from police on foot. Then, the driver tried to carjack a couple of vehicles in the gas station parking lot.

The male suspect was bitten by a police dog and taken to the hospital for treatment. A female suspect was released, but she could face charges as well.
