(SALT LAKE CITY, UT) — The Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating a fatal hit and run crash early Saturday morning, as all lanes re-open at 400 South 500 East.

According to a police statement released around 6:15 a.m., the investigation started at 12:55 a.m. , when 911 dispatchers received information about a man down on the ground at 415 East 400 South.

Officers arrived and located the victim, a 61-year-old man, in a westbound lane of traffic with critical injuries.  Officers began immediate lifesaving efforts, but the man died on scene.  The identity of that man, believed from Salt Lake City, is not available pending notification of next of kin.

The driver who hit the man did not stop and fled the scene.  Police say they believe the suspect’s vehicle would have front end damage, but a more complete description of that vehicle is not available early Saturday morning.

This is the city’s second fatal traffic-related fatality for 2022.

Utah Department of Transportation management center reported all lanes blocked while officers investigated.  By 6:07 a.m. all lanes had been re-opened.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
