SALT LAKE CITY — Two car crashes on Sunday involved wrong-way drivers. One of those crashes became a fatal accident and turned into an hours-long road closure of I-15.

The Utah Highway Patrol reports that calls began coming into their dispatchers at about 7:15 p.m. on Sunday about a vehicle driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-15 near 2600 South.

A crash was soon reported on I-15 near Center Street involving multiple vehicles as well as a motorcycle. Officials said the wrong-way vehicle, a green Chrysler, hit a motorcycle and then swerved out of the HOV and hit a white Ford Fusion. Finally, the wrong-way driver’s car was hit by a blue Kia.

The UHP reports the motorcyclist was killed in the crash. Four other occupants of the involved vehicles were injured, including the driver of the wrong-way vehicle. That driver was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.

The investigation of the accident closed I-15 at milepost 312, as well as I-215 north to I-15 from Legacy Parkway for nearly five hours on Sunday.

I-15 was re-opened early Monday morning.
